Haggerstone Island is probably one of the most remote island getaways on the Great Barrier Reef. It is only accessible by taking a flight from Cairns to Hicks Island, 660 km away. Then take a 20 minute boat transfer from Hicks Island to Haggerstone Island in the far north reaches of the Great Barrier Reef. Haggerstone Island is run by a couple, Roy and Anne Turner, who have built the accommodations there and play host to all guests since 1985. The seas and reef around Haggerstone are untouched and unexplored. The island accommodates up to about 12 people at a time in the 4 different huts or houses build by Roy. The island’s accommodations have hot and cold running water, queen sized beds, refrigeration, gas cooking facilities, sinks, 12/240 volt power, showers, toilets, lounge and deck areas, and laundry service. While there, you can catch your own meals and pair it with the fresh grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs on the island. Activities include beach combing, swimming, boating, bird watching, and helicopter tours. You can go skin diving or snorkeling here all year round and enjoy the safety of the lagoons just off Haggerstone’s beach.
