As the end of the year approaches, we look to the year in review. Facebook has done just that and published a list of the top 10 most checked into places in Australia in 2014. We wanted to highlight these top 10 most popular places according to Facebook check-ins and let you know what they are all about.

Darling Harbour is a popular section of the Sydney Harbour that is adjacent to the Sydney’s city centre. There is regularly plenty of foot traffic there to see the restaurants and other attractions. It is home to the National Maritime Museum, Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, Wild Life Sydney Zoo, Chinese Garden of Friendship, and Madame Tussaud’s Sydney Wax Museum. The King Street Wharf is a hot spot at night where many locals and tourists flock to see the restaurants, nightclubs, alfresco cages and waterfront promenade.

It is set in gorgeous Sydney Harbour with the Sydney Harbour Bridge adjacent to the beautifully architected building. It is known as a hub of art and culture with many different types of events shown there. Not only opera performances take place in the Sydney Opera House; you can also see concerts, award shows, and musical performances.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground is located in Yarra Park and is the home field to the Melbourne Cricket Club. It’s no surprise they are one of the most popular places in Australia according to Facebook because they are currently running a promotion encouraging visitors to check in on Facebook and become the most checked-in stadium in the world. Since the stadium seats well over 100,000 people and is one of the largest stadiums in the world, the goal is within reach. In addition to cricket games, the grounds also host a number of other sporting events throughout the year.

Sydney Harbour is known all over the world. It is home to some of Australia’s most iconic images and well-known destinations including the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and Darling Harbour. All of which were also on Facebook’s most checked into places for 2014. The harbour is also known as Port Jackson and it is where the ocean cuts into Sydney from the Tasman Sea. It is often referred to as the most beautiful natural harbour in the world. Just take one look at the landscape images and you will have to agree. The harbour gives you access to many destinations around Sydney and also is where you can take cruises within the harbour or head out to sea.

The Taronga Zoo opened in 1916 near Sydney in the suburb of Mosman. It is a large zoo that has 8 regions over 21 hectares. The zoo is open 365 days a year. There are over 4,000 animals at the zoo, many different animal exhibits, shows and talks, and tours available. You can book overnight accommodations and plan events at the zoo as well. It is definitely one of the most popular destinations in Sydney and is why it is #5 on the list of most popular checked into places on Facebook this year. In addition to the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, there is a sister zoo in Western Plains, which is about a 5 hour drive from Sydney called the Taronga Zoo Western Plains. It is a larger space for a zoo and is home to some of the larger, grazing animals like elephants, rhinos, antelopes, and giraffes that were too crowded at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney.
